Rainy Day Roulette

I don’t know what the weather is like where you live but where I live it has rained the past 2 days and is likely to continue raining for at least the next 5 days. Now, I enjoy a rainy day every now and then but that’s about it – a rainy day, not a rainy week. So I needed to come up with something fun to get us through this next week.

Rainy Day RouletteThe solution: Rainy Day Roulette

How do you play?

First, write a list of activities you can do with your child on a rainy day.

Then, tape one activity in each section of your open umbrella. (Hope you’re not superstitious).

Place the umbrella on the floor and spin. While spinning, let your child throw a ball (make sure it’s small and light like a ping pong ball) in the middle. Wherever the ball lands, that’s what you do.

Variations: I thought you could even include chores in the umbrella if you need certain things done around the house. Then if the ball lands on “clean room,” for instance, you all clean rooms and then replace the clean room section with something fun. Rainy Day Roulette

If you really want to get crazy, you could let the umbrella decide everything for the day and tape foods on each section to pick what’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Just make sure you only put options on that you are willing to live with.

I came up with a quite a few activities but I’m always on the look out for more. What do you like to do on rainy days? I’m hoping to compile a huge list so that on rainy days (when I’m bored and can’t think of things to do) I can simply pull out these strips of paper and let the fun begin. If you want to start with my list you can download it here but I plan on updating it as soon as I get all your suggestions!

  1. This is an EXCELLENT idea and very versatile! I can see fun applications for this on rainy days or ANYTIME you read books about weather with your kids! I cannot wait to use this one.

Here is something fun to add to a rainy day: Place a container or two outside to “catch” the rain and then let the kids measure the rainfall. You can expand this activity by using different size and shape containers and asking which one has more rain, an excellent way to introduce volume and measurements to your kids!

    Keep the ideas coming! :)

  2. I love this idea! Not only does it give them a chance to do practical math, it also gives them an excuse to play in the rain to “check” their results.
