Ruler Growth Chart

I made the cutest growth chart this week with the help of my friend Jonie and her blog, which I love!

First I bought a 1″x 8″ x 6′ board for $5 at Home Depot. I brought it home, sanded it and stained it.  I used a stain called “Honey”.  When you stain wood, you paint it on, then wipe it off with a rag.  I let the stain dry overnight.

I then took a ruler and made a mark at every inch. Since the board is 6 feet tall and lots of people are over 6 feet tall, I decided to start my board at 9 inches (so I will hang it 8 inches off the ground and that way it will clear the floor board as well.)

Jonie cut out vinyl for me with numbers 1-6, little dashes for inch marks, a little bigger dashes for every 6 inches, and a big line for each foot mark.  Then I simply peeled the pieces off and stuck them to my stained wood.  For the numbers I used transfer tape.

This craft was really simple, cost about $10 and turned out super cute.  My kids will have some much fun seeing how much they’ve grown!growing collage

  1. My husband and I just made one of these! As in, tonight! :) But after the stain I am a little worried that its too dark .have you marked your boys yet? What are you using to write with? A sharpie? I am worried my marks may not show!

    • So far I’ve only marked it with a pencil. You can see their height when you get close but I think a Sharpie would be perfect. If it’s too dark you could try a silver Sharpie or another color. Let me know what you decide. This may sound ridiculous but it’s so cute I’m almost afraid I’ll mess it up when I mark on it even though that’s the whole point. Let me know what you decide and how it works!

  2. I love this project and think I am going to make one. One question though, how did you mount the ruler to the wall?

    • I used some heavy duty picture hanging clasps. I just nailed it to the back and then measured the inches from the floor and hung it. Does that make sense?
